چکیده

A comprehensive timing jitter comparison is made for mode-locked semiconductor lasers using active, passive, and hybrid mode-locking techniques in both external and monolithic cavity configurations. Active mode locking gives the lowest residual rms timing jitter of 65 fs ( 150 Hz-50 MHz), followed by the hybrid and passive mode-locking techniques. It is found that monolithic cavity devices with all active waveguides have higher timing jitter leveis than the comparable external cavity case.

rf linewidth reduction in a quantum dot passively mode-locked laser subject to external optical feedback

The effect of external optical feedback on an InAs/GaAs quantum dot passively mode-locked laser is investigated. The RF linewidth narrows from 8 KHz in the free-running situation to a value as low as 350 Hz under relatively low feedback. The RF linewidth characterization under resonant feedback at a multiple of the laser cavity length validates the prediction of a previous numerical simulation....

Effect of noise on the power spectrum of passively mode-locked lasers

We analyze the effects of noise on the power spectrum of pulse trains generated by a continuously operating passively mode-locked laser. The shape of the different harmonics of the power spectrum is calculated in the presence of correlated timing fluctuations between neighboring pulses and in the presence of amplitude fluctuations. The spectra at the different harmonics are influenced mainly by...

Delay-induced dynamics and jitter reduction of passively mode-locked semiconductor lasers subject to optical feedback

We study a passively mode-locked semiconductor ring laser subject to optical feedback from an external mirror. Using a delay differential equation model for the mode-locked laser, we are able to systematically investigate the resonance effects of the inter-spike interval time of the laser and the roundtrip time of the light in the external cavity (delay time) for intermediate and long delay tim...

Locking Bandwidth of Actively Mode-Locked Semiconductor Lasers

The locking bandwidth of an actively mode-locked semiconductor laser is a measure of its tolerance to variations in the input drive frequency. At frequencies outside the locking bandwidth, the output pulses from the laser exhibit large amplitude fluctuations and timing jitter. This paper investigates the locking bandwidths of fundamentally driven and harmonically driven high-repetition-rate act...

Towards low timing phase noise operation in fiber lasers mode locked by graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes at 1.5 µm.

We investigate the timing phase noise of fiber lasers mode locked by graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs), respectively, integrated in a linear cavity fiber laser in the reflecting operation. Due to the shorter decay time of the GO and CNTs, weaker slow saturable absorber effects are expected and mode-locked lasers based on these two saturable absorbers exhibit low excess timing phas...
